4/27 Tech Tip: Building a PLN with Twitter

Can we even go a day anymore without hearing, “Check us out on Twitter!” on the radio or TV??? Twitter has impacted our society in a way that many experts are STILL trying to figure out. Whether you’re following a celebrity, a friend, or a teacher from the opposite end of the world – Twitter provides a real-time way to communicate and collaborate with others. Sure…some people DO “tweet” about what they are having for breakfast, but there are MANY others who are using it as a tool to drive their own learning. I have to admit…when I first started using Twitter…I hated it. HATED IT. Then, I gave it another chance and discovered that it is the best professional development tool out there. Odds are, most of you probably won’t set up a Twitter account, but I think having a basic understanding of what Twitter is and how it has changed our society is crucial.

This week, we discussed Twitter and specifically focused on developing a Personal Learning Network (PLN) and using it in the classroom. A PLN offers an amazing way to collaborate with educators all over the world!

If you’re not really sure what Twitter is, watch this video by CommonCraft. They do a great job of explaining how it works!

HERE are some inside tips to Twitter “language.”

Although I wouldn’t advise students to set up an account in elementary school, there are ways that you can use Twitter in the classroom with a teacher account. For example, one of our district teachers is using Twitter for her space unit. She is following NASA, former astronauts, etc. to get live real-time information about that different things that are going on in space. THIS SITE offers some great tips about how to set up a Twitter account and how to use it in the classroom.

Are you looking for other teachers to follow? Many educators are on Twitter, and they are all constantly sharing ideas. HERE is a great site to use to find other educators in your field. HERE are many more resources about Twitter, including additional lists of educators. The more teachers you follow, the more great ideas you get!

Not sure where to start? Here are some of my favorite Tweeple (Twitter People)!

Google-Proof Questioning – What are your thoughts?

Some food for thought this morning…

This is one of the most thought provoking blog posts I’ve read this school year, and I wanted to share it with you.

Here is the original post by John Sowash.

What WILL life be like when our students can just grab their smart phone/iTouch/iPod/PSP/etc. in their back pocket and Google the answer? Do any of you do that now? Are any of your students doing it already?

What are your thoughts?

4/22 Tech Tip: Animoto

This week, we took some time to play with Animoto. If you haven’t ever heard of Animoto before, watch this –

Animoto is a great site to use for digital storytelling. HERE are some examples of how Animoto can be used in the classroom.

Read THIS post regarding how to set up an Animoto account and create your movie. Educators can sign up for all access accounts HERE. (Note: It may take a week or so to receive confirmation. Check your spam mail!) TIP – If you are going to do a class project using Animoto, create a class Gmail account for all of your students to use. That way, all of their movies will be saved under one log in.

The great thing about Animoto is that it provides you with HTML code so that you can embed the final movie on your website. Please let me know if you need any help with using Animoto!

Here are some additional interactive educational technology sites that may interest you this week –
Connectsums – Use coins, dice, or digits to find the sum.
Illuminations – LOTS of math resources aligned to grade level.
Learn Your Tables – A great way to help students learn their multiplication tables.
Engineering Interact – A site for elementary students that teaches physics concepts; specifically light, motion, sound, electricity, and space travel.
CNN Student News – Daily news for students from CNN – a great way to teach current events!

4/15 Tech Tip: TeacherTube

Good morning,

Are you or your students creating videos that you would like to share with other teachers, parents, or the world? There is a very easy way to upload your videos to the Internet and embed them into your webpage for easy viewing. Per our district website guidelines agreement, we will need to use TeacherTube to upload and embed videos. Just follow these steps:

TeacherTube

First, you will need to create a TeacherTube account. Click on FREE SIGN UP in the upper right hand corner and sign up for your account. Follow all of the prompts to set up your account.

Once you sign up, click on Home, Upload Video. Fill in all of the blanks in the upload area. Pay close attention to the bottom of the form. Make sure you keep your video PUBLIC, I advise NOT ALLOWING comments (unless you are approving them) or ratings, and make sure the Embed feature is ENABLED. (This will you allow you to put it on your website.)

The upload process usually happens fairly quickly, but the APPROVAL process may take awhile. (Sometimes hours!) A TeacherTube employee will have to view the entire video to be sure that it is okay for their site. Once it is uploaded, you will be able to see it in My Home/Videos.

Once your video is uploaded, you will need to get the source code for it so that you can embed it into your webpage. Click on the 3rd button (looks like a piece of paper), and a small box will pop up. (See below.) Right click and COPY the source code.

CMS4SCHOOLS

Log in to your CMS4Schools website. Go to OR create the page that you would like to embed your video into. Enter into edit mode. Once you have added in a text/graphic editor, you will be able to paste in the code. Click on the SOURCE button (the box will turn white), and PASTE in the code that you copied from TeacherTube. Save your changes, and you’re done! Your video will now play on your website.

Did you know??? You can embed ANYTHING into your webpage that has an HTML code! Voki’s, Animoto, Blabberize, Glogster, Slideshare (great for uploading PowerPoints), the list goes on and on! Just use the SOURCE button on your webpage editor to embed code from another site!

4/6 Tech Tip: CutePDF

Using CutePDF

The CutePDF printer allows you to create PDF files from any type of document. To create a PDF file from an existing document (for example, a Word document), print the document and select CutePDF as the printer. A box will come up asking you where you want to save your PDF file. Select an appropriate location and click Save. Your PDF file has been created.

The CutePDF printer is beneficial for posting files on your web page because they open with Adobe Reader, which is free for everyone. If you post Microsoft Office documents on your page and someone who does not have Microsoft Office on their computer wants to view the files, they will not be able to.

If you love CutePDF, you can also install it on your home computer. CutePDF is a free download and is available on their website. The program will just install as an additional printer.

Uploading PDF’s to your Webpage

1. Log in to CMS4Schools

2. Click on My File Uploads

3. Click on Add File

4. Click Browse, find your file, and click Add.

5. Once your file is uploaded, you will see it on your screen. Click on the blue ‘i’ button to get the web address of the document if you would like to link the document to one of your web pages. Copy (using right click) the file’s web address so that you can paste it OR hyperlink to one of your web pages.

6. Find the page that you would like to attach the file to, and then paste the link into the page. You can also create a hyperlink so that the entire file name isn’t showing on the webpage.
